Considering adopting a new pet? Have room in your home and heart to foster a rescue animal? Here’s info on animal shelters and rescues in southwest Michigan.
Considering a New Pet?
If you know that you want to bring a new pet into your family, consider adopting from a rescue or shelter first.
In the case of cats and dogs, prior to adoption, the pet is treated for any medical conditions, brought up-to-date on vaccines, dewormed if necessary, and spayed or neutered. In the case of young puppies and kittens, rescues may provide a voucher to cover that cost of this surgery when the animal is old enough. In addition to having sweet, loving mixed breed animals available for adoption, rescues and shelters often have purebred cats and dogs as well. There are even rescues that specialize in placing certain breeds.
Not Sure About Adopting? Have Room In Your Heart for More? Foster!
Fostering is a great way to help animals, and, if you’re considering adoption but are not sure, becoming a foster allows you to care for an animal until it gets adopted. Fostering also allows the rescue to glean valuable information about the animal being fostered, and how it behaves in a home environment, and allows you to get a feel for what it would be like to bring another pet into you home permanently. It’s a big win for everyone, people and pets.
If you’re not ready or able to bring a new pet into your life by adopting or fostering, there are still many ways you can help, by volunteering, donating or spreading the word about these important organizations.
